The Tampa Bay Rays have at least checked with the Texas Rangers about the availability of Jurickson Profar, according to two sources.

Profar, who turns 24 in February, is controllable for the next three seasons and affordable as well.

In the past, the Rangers wanted a starting pitcher from the Rays for Profar.

The Cleveland Indians have acquired Carlos Frias from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for cash.

Frias has gone 6-6 with a 4.50 ERA in 33 games over the past three seasons for the Dodgers.

He was limited to 47⅓ innings last season for the Dodgers, Triple-A Oklahoma City and Double-A Tulsa after making two trips to the disabled list with an oblique injury.

A contrite Yasiel Puig expressed Saturday a desire to remain with the Dodgers, and he put the blame for his turbulent 2016 season squarely on his own broad shoulders.

Speaking to reporters at the team's annual fan festival, Puig was asked if he was surprised that he has remained with the organization that originally signed him, even as trade rumors have persisted for consecutive off-seasons now.

Forsythe was sent to the Dodgers for Jose De Leon.

Tampa Bay is believed to be looking at first base and designated hitter candidates and a right-handed bat is preferred.

The list of possibilities includes Mike Napoli, Chris Carter, Mark Reynolds, Billy Butler and Aaron Hill.

The Chicago Cubs, looking to defend their World Series title, want to add depth to their starting rotation heading into the 2017 season.

They attempted to sign Tyson Ross before he landed with the Texas Rangers.

Last season, the Cubs saw five starters make 152 of the team's 162 starts and Jason Hammel (30 starts) has become a free agent.

Chicago could sign a free agent, make a trade or even enter with season with a solution in their sights.

"You saw what the White Sox got for Sale," Cashman said.

"I try to play in my mind what the equivalency would be with the Yankees," the general manager said. "Is Moncada the Gary Sanchez? You'd have to give up a Gary Sanchez-type. Would it be the equivalent of Moncada?

"And then you have to play around with the next (piece). Is it (a touted pitching prospect such as James) Kaprielian or Chance Adams or Justus Sheffield? It would probably be (Luis) Severino right now. So those are the two primers just to get the ball rolling with the other two players yet to be named to try to match up for Sale."

The Houston Astros are likely done making significant additions to their Major League roster, according to Jeff Luhnow.

The Astros have been connected to big-name starting pitchers such as Chris Archer, Sonny Gray and Jose Quintana in trade rumors, but Luhnow has effectively shut those down.

Luhnow said, this is "probably the roster that we're going to have to start the season. We're always open to considering ways to improve it, but right now I'd set the expectations low that there's going to be any major changes."

The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to search for a second baseman and have begun to search beyond a trade with the Minnesota Twins for Brian Dozier.

According to sources, L.A. is even searching beyond Ian Kinsler of the Detroit Tigers and Logan Forsythe of the Tampa Bay Rays. The Dodgers have spoken to the Texas Rangers about Jurickson Profar.

The Dodgers could also turn back to Chase Utley.

The Miami Marlins will acquire Dan Straily from the Cincinnati Reds for prospects.

Miami will send right-handed pitching prospects Luis Castillo, Austin Brice and minor league outfielder Isaiah White to Cincinnati.

Picked up off waivers by Cincinnati on April 1, Straily went 14-8 with a 3.76 ERA in 191 1/3 innings last season.

The Houston Astros continue to look for upgrades in their starting rotation and have been in contact with the Oakland Athletics regarding Sonny Gray.

Gray had a down 2016 season after performing as one of baseball's best pitchers from 2013-15.
